A physical geographer by training, Matthias Vanmaercke is an associate professor at the University of Liège. His research focuses on quantifying and understanding geomorphic processes (including gully erosion, landsliding and catchment sediment export) at regional, continental, and global scales. In particular, he and his team aim to understand the sensitivity of these processes to land cover and climate changes. Over the past decade, M. Vanmaercke co-authored >40 articles in international peer-reviewed journals. In recognition of his work, he received the division Outstanding Early Career Scientist Award from the European Geosciences Union, Division of Soil System Sciences in 2018.
